JetBlue (JBLU) announced the appointment of Joanna Geraghty as its new CEO, making her the first female to lead a major American airline. Long-time CEO, Robin Hayes, is stepping down due to health reasons. Hayes oversaw a difficult run for JetBlue with it’s stock price down below $5 and over 70% since he took over. Incoming CEO Geraghty has been with JetBlue for nearly two decades and currently serves as the company’s president and COO. The CEO transition comes at an important juncture for JetBlue. It awaits a federal judge’s ruling on its proposed $3.8 billion acquisition of Spirit Airlines; is dealing with challenges arising from the recent termination of its partnership with American Airlines; and continues working to recover from pandemic-related losses.
