Leadership Resets At Market Extremes

Biotech’s Confidence Test

Sarepta Therapeutics (SRPT) handed the CEO seat and a board seat to Michael Severino, the former Tessera CEO and AbbVie vice chair. That is a credibility hire after the stock collapsed 93% from its June 2024 peak; Sarepta screens as HIGH activist risk and trails the S&P by roughly 65 points over three years.

SAREPTA THERAPEUTICS INC (SRPT)Healthcare
$1.6B · 1Y TSR -7.1% · board C- · activist HIGH

SRPT 5Y stock price

5Y max drawdown: 92.6% (peak 2024-06-17 → trough 2025-07-21)
Michael Severino has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer and a Class I director of Sarepta Therapeutics, replacing Douglas Ingram who will exit as CEO and Board member.

Severino also chairs the science and technology committee at Viatris (VTRS), where his director-tenure TSR stands at 118%, a useful offset to Sarepta’s C- board grade.

Yarrow Bioscience (YARW) named a new CEO, CFO, COO, medical chief, development chief and chair after its merger — a top-to-bottom overhaul. The stock is up 197% over one year but remains down 52% over five years, with eight director exits over five years.

Industrial Succession At Altitude

Carpenter Technology (CRS) elevated Tony Thene to CEO, chairman and president after Brian Malloy’s death, moving fast at an A-rated industrial. Shares are up 78% over one year while the S&P added 15, but the succession ledger now reads 2 CEOs in 3y; the stock also collapsed 40% from its March 2022 peak before the run resumed.

CARPENTER TECHNOLOGY CORP (CRS)Industrials
$25.0B · 1Y TSR +78.1% · board A · activist LOW

CRS 5Y stock price

5Y max drawdown: 39.8% (peak 2022-03-28 → trough 2022-07-04)
On July 26, 2026, Tony R. Thene was appointed as Chief Executive Officer, Chairman of the Board, and President of Carpenter Technology Corporation following the passing of Brian J. Malloy.

Timken (TKR) shifted Stephen Ribaudo into COO while Timothy Graham moved to chief commercial officer, a bench reshuffle at an industrial winner. The catch is tenure: 3 CEOs in 3 years and a longest-serving director at 41 years.

Tech Adds Oversight, Not Excuses

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) added David Goulden as a director while shares more than doubled over one year, beating the S&P by roughly 115 points. The stock collapsed 48% from its January 2025 peak, then recovered to a five-year total return of 217%; with 2 CFOs in 3 years, the board addition reads like oversight insurance, not window dressing.

HEWLETT PACKARD ENTERPRISE CO (HPE)Technology
$62.4B · 1Y TSR +130.2% · board B · activist ELEVATED

HPE 5Y stock price

5Y max drawdown: 47.5% (peak 2025-01-20 → trough 2025-03-31)
David I. Goulden has been appointed as a director of Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company effective July 24, 2026.

Lumentum (LITE) set Vincent Retort’s October retirement after a one-year moonshot, with shares up 531% while the S&P added 15. At an A- board, that kind of planned exit lands softer, even with 3 director exits in 3 years.

Healthcare’s Thin Finance Bench

Fortrea (FTRE) put 82-year-old David Smith in as interim CFO while Jason Knoblauch is on paid leave tied to pending litigation. That is not succession planning; it is triage at a company with 2 CEOs and 2 CFOs in 3 years.

Other Moves To Watch

CEO Transitions

  • Power Solutions International (PSIX) tapped Nan Hu as CEO after a 68% one-year slide, while Kenneth Li reverted to CFO.
  • Microchip Technology (MCHP) will lose Richard Simoncic to Menlo Microsystems, with shares still 21 points behind the S&P over three years.
  • Blackstone Secured Lending Fund (BXSL) saw co-CEO Jonathan Bock resign as the stock fell 18% over one year.

CFO Transitions

  • Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF) made Celso Goncalves Jr. president and CFO, with the stock down 14% over five years.
  • Unity Software (U) named Michael Lieb principal accounting officer at a D-rated board already cycling 2 CEOs and 2 CFOs in 3y.

Board / Director Changes

  • Kohl’s (KSS) handed Wendy Arlin the chair after John Schlifske retired, at a HIGH-risk name with 11 director exits in five years.
  • Centene (CNC) replaced Kenneth Burdick with Paul Diaz, extending a board record of 13 director exits in five years.
  • FuboTV (FUBO) added Alisa Bowen to a D-rated board while the stock plunged 83% over one year.
