Third Point
Third Point LLC is an activist hedge fund founded by billionaire investor Daniel Loeb in 1995. The firm is known for taking large positions in undervalued companies and then pushing for changes to unlock shareholder value. Some of Third Point's notable campaigns include its successful push for changes at Yahoo! in 2012, which led to the resignation of the company's CEO and the appointment of new board members. Third Point also played a role in pushing for changes at Sony in 2013, calling for the company to spin off its entertainment division. Although Sony initially resisted the proposal, it eventually agreed to a partial spin-off of the unit. In 2020, Third Point called for changes at Prudential, urging the company to spin off its US business and improve its corporate governance. The hedge fund also pushed for changes at Intel, calling for the company to consider strategic alternatives and exploring a spin-off of its manufacturing operations.
