Highlights

  • Under Armour CEO departs unexpectedly. Under Armour (UAA) president and chief executive officer Patrik Frisk will be stepping down, effective June 1. Chief Operating Officer Colin Browne will serve as interim president and CEO. Frisk, who is expected to remain with Under Armour as an advisor through Sept. 1, did not provide a reason for his widely unexpected departure. Observers suggest that the move was not voluntary, pointing to Frisk’s $7M severance package. Frisk took over as CEO from the company’s founder, Kevin Plank, in January 2020 after serving as CEO of the footwear holding company Aldo Group. Plank indicated he will not take back the CEO role. Despite the sports retailer’s significant operational improvements and strong financial performance post-pandemic, UAA shares have declined 42% over the past year– versus a 7% decline for the S&P 500 over the same period. Frisk helped to drive Under Armour through a massive turnaround. although more recently the company has suffered from supply chain challenges and COVID lockdowns. UA offered a disappointing outlook for fiscal 2023, calling for 5-7% revenue growth YoY.
  • CFO Departs at Wheels Up Experience (UP). Wheels Up, a provider of on-demand private aviation, announced that it’s CFO, Eric Douglas Jacobs, is stepping down. Eric Cabezas, Senior Vice President of Finance, will serve as interim CFO while the company finds a replacement. Wheels Up deSPAC’d in July 2021 from parent Aspirational Consumer Lifestyle, raising $650M. The company, which sells memberships through which customers receive access to private aircraft, has grown mostly through acquisitions– the most notable being the private aviation business of Delta Private Jets. Delta holds ~27% equity stake in the company. UP shares have declined 72% and currently trade at ~$2.42.
