Highlights

CEO Changes

End of an era at NextEra (NEE). NextEra Energy chairman and CEO Jim Robo officially stepped down March 1. Robo is succeeded by John Ketchum, a 19-year veteran of the company and most recently president and CEO of NEE subsidiary NextEra Energy Resources. Rebecca Kujawa, NextEra Energy’s CFO, will take Ketchum’s place as the head of NextEra Energy Sources, and Kirk Crews, current vice president of business management for NextEra Energy Resources, will replace Kujawa as CFO.

Robo was instrumental in NextEra’s transformation from a sleepy Florida utility to a top wind and solar producer. Robo has been planning his retirement since 2016. He intended to leave the company around 2020, but extended his tenure to oversee the resolution of the 2020 rate case at Florida Power & Light, which was resolved via a settlement agreement in October 2021.

Robo’s 350% stock gain (20% TSR annualized) over his tenure was unmatched by his peers.

CEO succession at Autonomous Driving company TuSimple Holdings (TSP) upset investors. TuSimple Co-Founder and CTO Xiaodi Hou will succeed Cheng Lu as President and Chief Executive Officer and succeed Mo Chen as Chairman of the Board. Hou co-founded the Company after earning a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology.

Chen, who co-founded TuSimple, had served as executive chairman since September 2020 and served as CEO from the company’s inception in 2015 to September 2020. He held a roughly 7.6% stake in the company as of last April. Shares declined over 23% on the news, which TuSimple says the was part of a planned executive succession as it moves to the next phase of commercializing its L4 autonomous trucking technology. From a governance perspective, a dual CEO-Chairman won’t sit well with most investors.

Board Changes

Doug Baker steps down from Ecolab (ECL) Board. Douglas M. Baker, Jr., executive chairman of the board of directors of Ecolab, will step down from the board following the expiration of his current term on May 5, 2022. Baker was formerly CEO of the company until he stepped down at the beginning of 2021. Christophe Beck, CEO, and a member of the board of directors, has been elected by the board to serve as chair. Jeff Ettinger will remain lead independent director. Beck was a senior executive at Nestle for 16 years prior to joining ECL in 2015.
