Highlights

Schultz Making Changes at Starbucks (SBUX)

In his first week as interim CEO of Starbucks (SBUX), Howard Schultz has already made changes—the most notable being suspending the company’s share repurchase program in order to invest in operations. Starbucks did not buy back any stock last year, but recently committed to spending $20 billion on buybacks and dividends over the next three years.

The move comes as Starbucks faces a union push from its baristas. To date, nine locations have voted to unionize and more than 180 locations have filed petitions for a union election, albeit these numbers are still a small fraction of Starbucks’ overall U.S. footprint of ~9,000 stores. In addition, President Joe Biden and some Democratic leaders have pushed for a harder line against insider selling and buybacks. The White House’s recently released budget plan calls for banning executives from selling their shares for a specified period after a corporate buyback.

Keurig Dr. Pepper (KDP) announces CEO Transition Plan

Keurig Dr, Pepper (KDP) announced the appointment of Ozan Dokmecioglu, currently CFO & President of International, as the Company’s next CEO, effective July 29, 2022. Dokmecioglu will also join the Company’s Board of Directors at that time.  Bob Gamgort, currently Chairman and CEO, has committed to serve as Executive Chairman of KDP for two years.

With the company’s three-year integration plan following the Dr. Pepper Snapple merger, now is a good time for a transition in leadership. As CEO, Dokmecioglu will execute Keurig Dr Pepper’s operational strategy. Gamgort will lead the board of directors and oversee the company’s discretionary cash. Gamgort had been the CEO of the former Keurig Green Mountain since 2016, when the company went private. Following the merger with Dr Pepper Snapple in 2018, Gamgort became CEO. Dokmecioglu was appointed CFO of Keurig Green Mountain in 2016.

Elon Musk Joins the Board at Twitter (TWTR)

Less than 24 hours after revealing his ownership of a 9.2% stake in Twitter (TWTR), Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk has been appointed to the company’s board of directors. Twitter founder Jack Dorsey celebrated the move, saying Musk would make for “an incredible team” with Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal.

In the weeks he was accumulating his TWTR stake, Musk’s posts to his more than 80 million followers focused on the way the social network moderates speech on its platform. Twitter and other platforms like Meta’s Facebook (FB) have struggled to control how their platforms spread false information about important topics like elections and vaccines. At the same time, governments around the world want to regulate how Twitter regulates its users’ speech. See our detailed analysis here.
