This Week’s Highlights

CEO Changes

Drama at Peloton (PTON) remains high. Earlier this week the troubled exercise equipment maker announced a major leadership shakeup. Barry McCarthy (rated A as a CFO, C as a director, unrated as CEO), formerly CFO of Spotify and Netflix, will become CEO and president. McCarthy left the board of Msd Acquisition Corp (MSDA). Former Peloton CEO John Foley (D) will become the company’s executive chair.

Foley wrote in a public note that the appointment is the “culmination of a months-long succession plan” he’s been working on with the board. Peloton also announced it will lay off about 2,800 employees, including about 20% of its corporate positions — a move hinted at a few weeks ago. In addition to the workforce reduction, the company plans to save $800 million in annual operating costs by reducing warehouses and expanding delivery agreements with third-party providers.

While Foley has borne the brunt of the blame for Peloton’s troubles, the executive switch hasn’t exactly been welcomed with enthusiasm. Activist investor Blackwells Capital, which called for Foley’s dismissal weeks ago, unleashed a scathing 65-page slideshow excoriating the move, alleging that it does nothing to address Peloton’s woes. Other critics point to McCarthy’s lack of experience as a CEO.

Hertz (HTZ) appointed Stephen Scherr as CEO—effective February 28th. Scherr makes the jump after nearly 3 decades at Goldman Sachs, having served as CFO since 2018. After amassing an overwhelming amount of debt and struggling amidst the pandemic, Hertz filed for bankruptcy in May 2020. But the recent rebound in travel offered a lifeline for the company, which has since emerged from bankruptcy early last summer to a red-hot market for rental cars. In October, Hertz announced a bold electrification strategy, with a plan to add 100,000  Tesla (TSLA) electric vehicles (EVs) to its fleet.

Director Changes

In the bear signal heard around the world, Peter Thiel (A), co-founder of Paypal (PYPL) and data analytics company Palantir (PLTR), stepped down from the Board at Meta/Facebook (FB) — raising eyebrows about the company’s politics and waning sphere of influence.

Read our quick take on Peter Thiel leaving the Meta/Facebook (FB) board here.
